EV Charger Installation FAQ
Straight answers about costs, permits, panels, rebates and how this referral service works.
Are you an electrician?
No. Northern Utah EV Charging is a referral service. We connect you with an independent, licensed and insured local electrician, who provides the quote and does the work under their own license.
Does it cost anything to use this service?
No. Quote requests are free and there's no obligation. We may be paid by the electricians we refer, and that doesn't add to your price.
How much does EV charger installation cost in Utah?
Published Utah ranges for a straightforward Level 2 install run roughly $500 to $2,500, with about $1,400 typical. Trenching, subpanels and 200-amp upgrades add more. See the cost guide.
Is there a Rocky Mountain Power rebate for a home EV charger in 2026?
No. RMP removed the residential Level 2 charger rebate effective Jan. 1, 2026. Business and multifamily incentives remain. See the rebate guide.
Can I still get the federal 30C tax credit for a home charger?
Only for a charger placed in service by June 30, 2026, at a main home in an eligible census tract. Installs after that date don't qualify.
Do I need a permit?
Yes. A new 240-volt circuit requires an electrical permit and inspection through your city, or Weber County for unincorporated areas like Eden. The electrician pulls it.
Do I need a 200-amp panel?
Not necessarily. A load calculation shows whether your current service can support a charger. Lower amperage settings or load management often avoid an upgrade.
Tesla Wall Connector or NEMA 14-50 outlet?
A hardwired Wall Connector allows up to 48 amps and has no receptacle to wear out. A 14-50 outlet is limited to 40 amps but lets you take a portable charger with you.
Will a Tesla charger work with my non-Tesla EV?
Many 2025 and 2026 EVs have the same NACS (J3400) port. For J1772 cars, Tesla's Universal Wall Connector includes a built-in adapter.
What is Rocky Mountain Power's time-of-use rate?
An optional Schedule 1 rate where only 6 to 10 p.m. on non-holiday weekdays is on-peak. Off-peak base energy is about 6.6¢ to 7.5¢ per kWh, depending on season, before surcharges.
I live in Bountiful or Kaysville. Do RMP programs apply?
Generally no. Both cities run their own municipal utilities, so RMP's time-of-use rate and Wattsmart Drive usually don't apply. Check your bill.
Can I install a charger outside?
Yes, with an outdoor-rated charger and weatherproof wiring methods. In Utah winters, a garage location is easier on the equipment when it's an option.
How long does installation take?
Simple installs are often a few hours on site. Permits, panel upgrades and utility coordination set the overall timeline.
What should I send to get an accurate quote?
Your city, vehicle, where you park, rough distance from the panel, and a photo of your panel with the door open.
