Garage vs. Outdoor EV Charger Installation
Attached garage, driveway, carport or a detached shop 100 feet away: what changes, and what it costs.
Attached garage: usually the simplest
If the panel is in or next to the garage, the run is short and protected from weather, which makes it the least expensive install. Panels in the basement on the far side of the house add wire and labor, and finished walls add patching or surface conduit.
Outdoor and driveway installs
Plenty of Northern Utah homes have single-car garages, carports, or no garage. Outdoor installs need a charger rated for outdoor use, weatherproof fittings, and a mounting spot where the cable reaches the port without crossing a walkway. Winters here are hard on cables, so look for a unit with a cold-flexible cable and a holster.
Detached garages, shops and trenching
Getting power to a detached garage or shop usually means a trench and either a dedicated circuit or a feeder to a subpanel. Distance, surface (lawn versus concrete or rock) and wire size drive the cost. One Utah electrician publishes $1,800 to $3,200 for a detached garage 50 or more feet away with trenching, and $2,000 to $3,500 when a subpanel is needed.[1] A Salt Lake City electrician lists underground conduit and trenching at $400 to $900 extra, depending on distance.[2]
Before any digging, Utah requires a call to 811 (Blue Stakes of Utah) to locate buried utilities. Your electrician handles it. On larger west Weber and Ogden Valley lots, ask whether a subpanel in the shop could power both the charger and future tools.
Questions to answer before your quote
- Where does the car park, and where is its charge port?
- How far is it from the panel, roughly, in feet?
- Is the route lawn, concrete, gravel or finished interior?
- Does an HOA have rules about exterior equipment?
FAQ
Is it OK to leave a charger outside in a Utah winter?
Yes, if the charger is rated for outdoor use and installed with weatherproof fittings. A garage location is still easier on the cable and electronics.
How deep does the trench need to be?
It depends on the wiring method and conduit type under the code. The electrician specifies it and the inspector checks it.
Can I dig the trench myself to save money?
Some electricians allow it, but discuss it first. The trench has to meet code depth, and Blue Stakes must be called before digging.
